Tomorrowland a 2015 movie directed by Brad Bird and co-written with Damon Lindelof is known for its visually stunning scenes. The story is about uncovering the secret of a futuristic city Tomorrowland.

1. The invisible plot structure of Tomorrowland
1A. The script of Tomorrowland borrows 86% of its events from 6 mythological tales
Frank’s quest is driven by the desire for self-reliance. The quest borrows events from Daedalus’ tale in Greek mythology. Both Daedalus & Frank are revered for their creations. Frank’s quest is also driven by the desire of fairness and justice. The quest borrows events from the tale of Prometheus from Greek mythology. Both Prometheus and Frank rebel to prevent exploitation by unscrupulous forces.
Casey’s quest is driven by the desire for finding an elusive person/object. The quest borrows events from the tale of Gilgamesh in Sumerian mythology. Gilgamesh’s search for the elixir of life is similar to Casey’s hunt for the futuristic world. Casey’s quest is also driven by the desire of independence. The quest borrows events from tale of David in Abrahamic mythology. Both David and Casey prove their worth when they finally get an opportunity.
Athena’s quest is driven by the desire for honour & loyalty. The quest borrows events from the tale of Hanuman in Hindu mythology. Both Hanuman & Athena demonstrate unquestioned loyalty, showing a willingness to sacrifice themselves.
David’s quest is driven by the desire to punish offenders. The quest borrows events from the tale of Duryodhan in Hindu mythology. Both Duryodhan & David banish adversaries to control of the kingdom.

Tales interweaved
Duryodhan, Gilgamesh, Hanuman & Prometheus
I. How does interweaving mythological tales lead to infinite story plots?
II. Can the pursuit of a Desire have more than one quest?
2. The potential of Tomorrowland's plot structure: $70-86MM
The interweaving of 32 mythological tales can generate a billion unique stories. By using these 32 tales, we can extract the plot structure of any story across various genres. Our study of blockbuster, hit, and flop plot structures led to the discovery of the Mythosis Code, a set of principles for creating compelling stories. The plot structure of a story is analyzed to see how well it adheres to these storytelling principles.
2A. Plot structure evaluation of Tomorrowland
- All Blockbusters have at least 3 universal quests. Tomorrowland has 3 universal quests of Expedition, Idealism & Vengeance. The quests of Independence & Honour are sparsely used.
- In Blockbusters, each universal quest is mirrored by ONLY ONE character. Casey mirrors the universal quests of Expedition & Independence. Frank also mirrors 2 universal quests of Idealism & Independence. Athena mirrors the quest of Honour. David mirrors the universal quest of Vengeance.
- Every Blockbuster character borrows at least 35% of the universal quest. Casey borrows 28% events from the quest for Expedition & 12% events from Independence. Frank borrows 12% events from the quest for Idealism & Independence. Athena borrows 7% events from the quest for Honour. David borrows 24% events from the quest for Vengeance.
- Blockbusters have a quest interweaving threshold of 0.5. Interweaving occurs when events of 2 quests occur simultaneously in the story. Tomorrowland’s quest interweaving score is 0.5 and at par.
An example of interweaving the quests of David & Frank:

2B. Box office revenue estimation of Tomorrowland
Cloud Atlas’ plot structure is ambitious since it attempts to interweave 7 universal quests.
- However, the plot structure reveals negligible growth of 4 characters across 6 stories.
- Even the 3 characters that witness some growth have insufficient depth.
- Lastly, the interweaving between character quests is extremely weak.
The Script Score measures a plot structure’s adherence to the four principles of Mythosis Code. We use the Script Score to estimate a movie’s audience appeal & revenues. Blockbuster plot structures have a score of at least 0.64 and appeal to 20% of the audiences.

I. How is Mythosis Code used to estimate revenues?
II. Aren’t box-office revenues influenced by several factors beyond just the story plot?
3. The ideal plot structure of Tomorrowland
We have identified 32 mythological tales, the superset of all tales across cultures. The quests of these tales have also recurred over time periods. They represent human behaviours that are deeply embedded in our shared memories. Each tale is the richest expression of the pursuit of a human desire. The tales have a unique pattern of events spread over 5 major arcs.
Mapping a character’s quest to the relevant mythological tale reveals the gaps in their quest, if any. Plugging these gaps with the missing events deepens the character quest. The missing events also provide an opportunity for interweaving the various quests. These events strengthen the story and unlock its hidden potential.
