1. The invisible plot structure of Sonic 3

1A. The script of Sonic 3 borrows 97% of its events from 4 mythological tales

Shadow’s quest is driven by selfishness. The quest borrows events from the tale of Valmiki from Hindu mythology. Both Valmiki and Shadow are self-centered not caring for anyone else.

Gerald’s quest is driven by the desire to punish offenders. The quest borrows events from the tale of Dron from Hindu mythology. Both Dron and Gerald seek to avenge their humiliation and betrayal.

Sonic’s quest is driven by the desire for finding and elusive person/object and mirrors the tale of Jason from Greek mythology. Jason’s desire to find The Golden Fleece is shared by Sonic who wants to find the 2nd safe key.

Dr. Ivo’s quest is driven by the desire of fairness and justice. The quest borrows events from the tale of Prometheus from Greek mythology. Both Prometheus and Dr Ivo rebel to stop the destructive forces.

Sonic has another quest driven by selfishness and mirrors the tale of Valmiki from Hindu mythology. Both Valmiki and Sonic are self-centered not caring for their loved ones.

Tails/Knuckles have an underdeveloped quest of Honour. Tom/Maddie/Rockwell/Stone have no quests.

3. The ideal plot structure of Sonic 3

We have identified 32 mythological tales, the superset of all tales across cultures. The quests of these tales have also recurred over time periods. They represent human behaviours that are deeply embedded in our shared memories. Each tale is the richest expression of the pursuit of a human desire. The tales have a unique pattern of events spread over 5 major arcs.

Mapping a character’s quest to the relevant mythological tale reveals the gaps in their quest, if any. Plugging these gaps with the missing events deepens the character quest. The missing events also provide an opportunity for interweaving the various quests. These events strengthen the story and unlock its hidden potential.

3A.Quest of characters and their mythological counterparts

Quest 1: Shadow mirrors the universal quest for Accumulation

Quest 2: Gerald mirrors the universal quest for Vengeance

Gerald’s desire for Vengeance stems from the need to punish offenders. The tale of Dron from Hindu mythology is the universal quest for Vengeance.

In Sonic 3, Gerald borrows from the Hindu mythological tale of Dron

Quest 3: Sonic mirrors the universal quest for Expedition

Sonic’s desire for Expedition stems from the need to find an elusive person/object. The tale of Jason from Greek mythology is the universal quest for Expedition.

Quest 4: Dr Ivo mirrors the universal quest for Idealism

Dr Ivo’s desire for Idealism stems from the need for fairness & justice. The tale of Prometheus from Greek mythology is the universal quest for Idealism.
